What is Reiki?
It is our belief that we think it is important for our clients to be knowledgeable in Reiki, it’s known history, what Reiki is, how it is performed, and also the benefits it has on those receiving this sacred energy.
The story goes that a Japanese Buddhist monk named Dr. Mikao Usui rediscovered Reiki in the mid-1800s during a journey to the mountains of Kori Yama where he participated in a 21-day fast and meditation. On his 21st day, he became enlighten with the knowledge of Reiki and began to use this healing modality to help heal those who were in need. Dr. Usui then began his Reiki clinic where he taught several pupils, including Dr. Chujiro Hayashi. Dr. Hayashi is an important individual because he is the Reiki Master that taught Mrs. Hawayo Takata, who was responsible for training 22 other Reiki Masters, thus spreading Reiki outside of Japan and into Western cultures.
Reiki stems from the Japanese word Rei, meaning “universal” and Ki, meaning “life force energy.” It is not affiliated with any particular religion or religious practice but is based on this “life force energy,” love, and light. As we know, energy flows through all living things and Reiki Practitioners have the education and knowledge that has been passed down from Dr. Usui to be able to connect and deliver this energy to help not only themselves but others as well.
During a typical Reiki session, the Reiki practitioner asks the client if he/she has anything in particular that they would like to accomplish during the session and also talk about any mental, emotional, or physical pain they may be having. With this knowledge, the practitioner can help set a goal/intention for that day’s session and focus on what that client needs most during that time. The client is able to relax on a massage table during the session or wherever they are most comfortable to receive the treatment. The Reiki practitioner rotates through multiple hand positions on the client's body to channel healing energy from the practitioner to the client's major energy systems. This helps cleanse, clear, and purify the client's energy system and electromagnetic field, allowing optimal healing to occur. If the client is not comfortable with a hands-on approach, Reiki can also be sent to the client with their hands off the client. Clients generally report feeling a calming and loving energy flowing throughout their body and a strong sense of being at peace throughout the session.
Reiki is a fantastic tool for promoting stress reduction and increasing relaxation. It also reduces depression and anxiety, decreases physical pain and inflammation, and enables emotional clarity and spiritual growth. It is not a cure for diseases or illnesses, but it helps promote the body’s natural healing ability and boosts one’s immune system, and is a wonderful supplement to one's medical treatment.
